Margaret Hunter (GB)

painting, sculpture

“Margaret Hunter’s art can be interpreted as an examination of human existence, with the superficial and what lies beneath it, with separations, divisions and reconciliations, transitions and transformations – with the whole spectrum of identities. The search for the female being one with herself finds its clearest expression in the painting “Dance” (2004).” © Christoph Tannert (April 2021, UNMASKED #1)

artistic position

In 2019 Margaret Hunter’s work on the Berlin Wall, as a “witness of the time”, was part of the 30th anniversary celebrations organized by Kulturprojekte Berlin. It was shown alongside photographs and 3D film projections at the Brandenburg Gate and in the East Side Gallery. Her story was one of seven in the › BOOK that accompanies and documents the 30th anniversary celebrations.

“The figures in Margaret Hunter‘s paintings combine the elemental simplicity of primitive art with the movement and psychological realism of Western figures. Women at different stages of life, they are invested with significance, expressing internalised emotions. They are symbolic, but never only that, always grounded in the real world. Her wood sculptures – she makes the early cuts with an electric chainsaw – are robust and thoughtful, again combining the totemic presence of tribal statues with a more western sensibility, entering a dialogue with the artists who have worked this field before her. Some of her sculptures have cutaway sections at their core where something valuable and secret is lodged, or have marks on their surface like identity scarification practised by African tribes.”
