For the second time the Berlinage Residency brings together Collage Artists from different countries for ten days to explore Berlin, make art and exhibit together. This time, the focus will be on the tension between imaginary cities, utopias and their relationship to the reality of everyday urban life.
For as long as humans have gathered in cities, those cities have had their shining—or shadowy—counterparts. Imaginary cities, potential cities, future cities, dream cities.
Cities are products of human imagination and at the same time they question/ disrupt any grandiose planning, because they are used by human beings and become living entities that can never be fully controlled.
Artistic interpretations not only depict cities but also have the power to shape their identitiy – we see Prague through the eyes of Franz Kafka and walk through Dublin following James Joyce.
What ever place an artist grew up in, is living now is shaping how they will experience Berlin and what aspects they are interested in. In a group of collage artists everybody will be adding to the collective field and produce Berlin-snippets that have not been here before.
The residency takes place in two parts: Before traveling to Berlin, the artists make a work (or a small series) on the theme of Imaginary City for the first part of the exhibition. Once in Berlin, there will be time to explore the city and use the fresh impressions to complete the work brought along with a Berlin work for the final exhibition.
