artistic position
Paula Klien is a Brazilian artist who works in the context of contemporary visual art and plays a pioneering role in Brazil’s crypto and NFT scenario.
Paula Klien’s ten-year experience with photography contrasts with her current liberal and intuitive journey. She returns to her visual arts universe in 2016 and finds in the millennial tradition of ink the antithesis of her earlier experience of creating images with photographic equipment.
Light and shadow are converted into a cornerstone of fluid and monochromatic abstracts. Conceptually, this investigation is in the field of spirituality, where the process becomes the tool for the quest of transcendence, timelessness, silence and surrender. The intimacy between spontaneity and control, action and inaction, visible and invisible, as forms, is unpredictable and limitless with no boundaries and unfolding by chance.
With the proposal of rereading the traditional “Chinese Ink Painting”, Paula Klien develops a very personal technique, turning into contemporary the classic version that has its origin in the influences of Chinese Taoist doctrine, by the principle of “let it flow“.
Her latest works combine the digital medium of photography with the analogue haptics of painting. The beginning is a drawing with Chinese ink, which is scanned, digitally processed and printed in a limited edition using the valuable digigraphie process. The original pictures are folded, the mirror effect creates a kaleidoscopic mirage. An artistic position that raises analogies to the projective Rorschachs test, seems to emerge from the unconscious and yearns for interpretation.
Paula Klien’s lyrical abstractions radiate a feeling of darkness, fluidity and a rough yet deep elegance.
