shredded horizon no. 4 | 2025

First presented in 2025 as part of the exhibition “REFLECTION” at aquabitArt Gallery, Janine Mackenroth’s works “shredded horizon no. 4 | 2025” and “shredded horizon no. 3 | 2025” belong to her “shredded horizon” series. Each artwork consists of an object frame containing approximately 20,000 shredded EURO banknotes sourced from the German Bundesbank. The frames are designed to be rotatable, allowing viewers to continuously create new combinations as the shredded fragments shift, unveiling different colors that echo the spectrum found in EURO banknotes.

The dynamic movement within the frame highlights both the fragility and multiplicity of monetary value and identity. As the background colors match those of the original currencies, the shifting combinations evoke new perspectives with each rotation – turning destruction into aesthetic possibility and contemplation. Mackenroth’s use of genuine, disintegrated money questions notions of material worth and the symbolism of currency in contemporary society.

“Shredded horizon” thus transform the remains of finance into objects of reflection and transformation, mirroring the broader themes of the “REFLECTION” exhibition, where viewers confront the instability and continual reformation of value, history, and meaning.

REFLECTION is a simple, but also complex word that thematises our time and the extensive, sometimes very shocking changes in the world and society.
It is also a time of upheaval, a time to leave the old behind and embrace the new.
A time of contemplation, of looking back and looking forward, but also a time when we can focus on ourselves and our innermost wishes and goals in this life.
A time for reflection. For the first time, aquabitArt is showing all 8 artists of the gallery in a real, offline group exhibition.
It brings together very different artistic positions on the theme of REFLEXION in the form of painting, drawing, sculpture and photography.
