TWENTY EURO BLUE 2024

As part of her ongoing Nail Polish Edition (2022–2024), Janine Mackenroth introduced TWENTY EURO BLUE in 2024 – a plant-based nail polish capturing the clear, luminous blue of the €20 banknote. Produced in Germany from 90% plant-derived ingredients and conceived to be 100% wearable, this shade is both a sustainable cosmetic product and a conceptual artwork designed for everyday life.

By translating the crisp, trustworthy blue of this widely circulated currency into an intimate accessory, Mackenroth reflects on the layers of meaning embedded in colour — from economic symbolism to emotional resonance. The tone of TWENTY EURO BLUE suggests stability, openness, and connection, while subtly evoking the flows of trade, travel, and exchange that the €20 note so often facilitates.

Like all works in the series, TWENTY EURO BLUE turns nails into portable, living canvases, allowing the wearer to carry the aesthetics – and the questions – of currency directly into daily experience.
